Is it legal to have an MMA (mixed martial arts) tournament in a public park?

So, i have gloves. Experience. As do my friends, and we have sparred for far to long. Time to actually do some damage >:}

So i was wondering, would it be legal to have an MMA tournament in a public park? We have all the protective gear, and know what we are doing. Plus, it’s not like we’re letting anyone join in, you have to be invited.

So is that legal, or do you have to have the park owners permission?
Okay, so don’t comment on the safety issue. We do UFC all the time, we know what were getting ourselves into. I’ve broken my ankle, fractured my writst, and take several low blows in my time. Just anser the question please.

If you’re both experienced, then do it in your gym. You do UFC all the time huh?

You would probably have to rent the area for such an event. Contact the city hall who owns the park and ask.

How would you like me to invite a bunch of friends into your back yard and we all beat each other up. There is such a thing as liability. Accidents do happen even with protective gear. You have to have insurance to host a public event like this and you should probably have a medic attending just in case.
Honestly, it does not sound like you know what you are doing at all. Meeting with friends for a friendly sparring match is one thing but hosting a tournament even if it is an invitational is another thing.

illegal. mma fights have to be sanctioned by the state athletic commission. if you and your friends start fighting in a public park you will all be arrested.

and obviously don’t know awhole lot about the sport of mma, considering you said, “we do UFC all the time,” UFC is an organization. MMA is the sport.

First, you’re not ‘doing UFC’ all the time. You’re (I guess) doing MMA all the time. Second, you’d have to have a permit from the city, I would imagine. And third, There would have to be a ringside doctor, a qualifed referee, emergency and security services available, and SOMEONE there with enough experience to oversee the production. You don’t just go to a park and start beating the crap out of each other. It doesn’t work that way, boyo.

Not Legal…nobody wants that kind of liability on their property…. safety issue ? hah, that’s the entire point man…that’s the entire point of why you CANT do it at a park. and if for some reason someone did let you do it, its still illegal. it has to be sanctioned. You should just do it in someones backyard or something. People at the park would not like that at all… If you want to be serious, then get serious and be professional about it.

“Plus, it’s not like we’re letting anyone join in, you have to be invited.”
Is there such a thing as a private park ?

It has to be done at a gym or something like that….a Business that has all the liability.

First off when you say you do UFC all the time…. you lose all credibility. Just to let you know (its MMA, not UFC).

But on to your question. Laws very by state, but holding an event private or otherwise that is not sanctioned by the state could open you up to various state and local violations. Again depending on the state, you can face fines, probation, even jail time (while probably an outside shot, it is possible).

In 2007, American Top Team held an event IN THERE OWN GYM, with only there own fighters fighting. But six police officers saw the event, and Din Thomas was charged with one FELONY count of running prohibited competitions. The charges were eventually dropped, but only because he was able to convince the DA it was his students and his gym, therefore it was practice. But I doubt you could convince a DA of that being you will be in a park. My guess is you wouldn’t even have a mat or a ring/cage, so therefore I believe you wouldn’t get out of it.

LLLLOOOOLLLL…. HAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA WE DO UFC ALL THE TIME!

It is highly illegal. Public parks are under the control of the city. They will not issue you a permit and without the permit you are violating the law (which you are doing anyway). In order to get a permit you will be required to carry over 2 Million in liability insurance and have the proper permits from your state issuing authority (Athletic Commission).

What you ahve described is a very bad idea especially allowing anyone in. If someone enters, you have no insurance, and they have little training and get seriously injured you will lose in court.
